As an organization Sigma Kappa encourages our members to be involved in their campus and community. Because of this focus on involvement outside of Sigma Kappa, our sisters are able to engage with the campus and community in ways that are important to them by hosting and participating in a number of different events.
Each year Sigma Kappa hosts and takes part in a variety of different events in and around Duquesne University's campus. Some events Sigma Kappa personally hosts include UVC, Walk to End ALZ, and Cut Out ALZ. Sigma Kappa's Ultra Violet Challenge usually consists of an obstacle course of some sort and all the proceeds benefit one of our main philanthropies. Cut Out ALZ is an event in which we hire a professional salon to come to campus and give hair cuts for approximately $10. Again, all proceeds benefit our philanthropies. The Walk to End ALZ happens every year in October/November and each sister is required to fundraise for this event. The walk takes place in the morning and is filled with different vendors and entertainment. Most importantly, the walk raises awareness about Alzheimer's disease. Sigma Kappa sisters are also required to attend at least one of another sorority or fraternity's events on campus each semester. Additionally, Sigma Kappa participates in Duquesne University's Greek week which is composed of games, competitions, and Greek Sing.
We also like to have fun with our friends and sisters at our formals and date parties each semester. Our social chair works very hard to plan these wonderful events; and they're truly something to look forward to! They are usually held at banquet halls, hotel ballrooms, or restaurants. It's always exciting getting to dress up and have a night out on the town, while getting to know each of our sisters just a little better. Sisterhood is very important in Sigma Kappa, but we also encourage our members to branch out and meet new people in the Greek community. Formals and date parties are a great way to do so!
Sigma Kappa's love our parents! Every year Sigma Kappa Kappa Mu hosts Parent's Weekend, which is when we can give our families a little taste of the sisterhood we love so much. In the past we have hosted a mother daughter brunch consisting of food, entertainment, and even raffle baskets. We have also hosted a father daughter Pirates game where dads and daughters can enjoy food and family fun in the city. It's the least we can do to show our parents how much we appreciate having them in our lives and giving us the opportunity to be in Sigma Kappa.
